Watercolor

In this assignment we were to focus on three of our classmates and the accessories they wear. I wanted there to be a sense of balance in the composition that would accentuate the accessory. For the earring, I chose to make it about three times the size it should so it would emphasize the detail. I also chose not to draw her entire head so there would be less focus on her and more on the earring. Coloring in the scarf was a little tricky, I didn't want it to take all the focus away but I wanted it to guide your eye which is why I chose to dramatize the length of it to cross over onto the next page. I decided not to color in the skin tone, because I wanted the accessories to pop out. I really like the way this turned out. Sometimes it is okay to exaggerate reality.

Storytelling

Architectural Record. May 2009. Vol. 197, No. 5
I chose this layout for the storytelling assignment. I liked the way the page was divided in half and how the top was reflected to something completely different.

This is the layout I came up with describing my first week back at school. I wanted it to remain simplistic like the original layout. The two halves of the page make up who I am in college. I chose to sketch scenes rather than items to show where I spent my time my first week back. The top being a movie theatre and the bottom being the art building. I chose the colors yellow and blue to represent UNCG. I liked how the two buildings came out. I tried to mimic the use of space, making the top more clustered and the bottom having more negative space. I hadn't done perspective drawing in a while, so it was fun to work on this. I think I could improve on the font and shading; but overall, I like the layout.

Illuminating

This is my very very first assignment as being an iarc student! This assignment was fun for me because I got to choose five artifacts that have importance to me. I chose my telescope which I received one Christmas. It reminds me of all the times I spent with my dad exploring nature and space. I also chose a teapot because my mom always fixes us tea every morning when I am home. It reminds me of her love and comfort. I chose my contact case because I am basically blind without my contacts. The Bible is also an artifact that is important to me. It is where I get my beliefs from and shows me the love I should mimic. My last artifact is a plastic hen about 4 inches high that my oldest sister gave to me as a going off to college present. You push her head and her wings flap out and she lays a gumball egg. She sits on my desk to remind me of my sister's silliness and love for life. I chose a layout that resembled a newspaper and used the different lines to draw your eye from one object to the next. To personalize the objects even more, I chose a quote that I like that goes along with the item. We were only allowed to choose one color to accentuate our drawing. I chose blue because my grandmother used to say "I love every color as long as it’s blue!"
